SAN ANTONIO —  Today, Rolando Pablos testified strongly against the proposed use of San Antonio taxpayer dollars to fund out-of-state travel for abortions.

In his letter to the Mayor and Council opposing an ‘expedited’ expenditure of $100,000 through the ‘Reproductive Justice Fund,’ Rolando writes:

“Taxpayer dollars should be used for services that have broad public support and clear, essential impact—things like public safety, infrastructure, and homelessness prevention. When city government funds highly polarizing programs like abortion travel, it oversteps its role and forces a large percentage of the population to subsidize something they may morally or ethically oppose. Abortion travel is not a core public service; it’s an ideological expenditure. It turns the city budget into a political weapon rather than a tool for the common good.

“This kind of spending undermines public trust in city government. In a divided electorate, taking a strong stance with public funds on deeply personal issues—like abortion—only deepens division and delegitimizes local governance. It sends a message that city tax dollars can be used to push one side of a contentious debate, regardless of whether the community is split down the middle. That’s not responsible governance—it’s partisan policymaking masked as public service…

“…I urge the Council to exercise fiscal prudence and reject the expedited procurement process for this funding. It is a divisive proposal, with minimal demand, legal risk, and broad potential to erode public trust. There are more pressing, unifying, and appropriate uses of public funds—this is not one of them.”
