SAN ANTONIO — Today, Rolando Pablos issued the following statement after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed a lawsuit against the City of San Antonio for illegally appropriating taxpayer funds to facilitate out-of-state travel for abortions:

“With yesterday’s disappointing and irresponsible vote to approve $100,000 in taxpayer funds to support travel for out-of-state abortions, it is no surprise that the State of Texas has now taken legal action against the City of San Antonio, putting our city’s taxpayers on the hook for even more money to defend against predictable litigation. Importantly, these taxpayer funds and those that the City will have to use to defend against this lawsuit could have been used on enhancing public safety and essential services that San Antonians rely on.

“Advocates and community members warned the San Antonio City Council against this total betrayal of taxpayers’ trust during yesterday’s Council session, and now we are paying the price.

“As mayor, I will take steps to immediately reverse this completely wrong-headed decision to use taxpayer funds for abortion tourism and restore fiscal responsibility and sanity at San Antonio City Hall.

“Change is needed and good change is coming!”
